Your right, it should NOT be typical...but it seems here it is. Contrary to a widely circulated rumor here at JT, the age of consent in Japan is NOT thirteen, at least not strictly speaking.

While the Japanese national penal code does indeed set the age of consent at 13, at the prefectural level, most, if not all, prefectural governments have seen the wisdom of raising this age limit to between the ages of 16 and 18.

While the national law is indeed absurd, setting the age at a ridiculously low 13 years of age, it�fs the prefectures that have the final word, and their take on the subject is clearly more rational.

So yes, for all the bizarre little pedophiliac freaks hiding out in the seedy underbelly of the JT message forum, you can still be prosecuted and punished for having sex with some below the age of 16: 1,000,000 yen, ten years in prison, or both. I�fm certain you�fll all come out of the woodwork any time now to extol the virtues of sex with children, while lamenting the injustice of being prevented from buggering emotionally and physically defenseless boys and girls, but the fact of the matter is that you are in a minority here and in most places, no matter how loud you yell.
