Japan, U.S. to meet in Tokyo over Japan's beef trade rules

TOKYO — Japan and the United States will hold a meeting in Tokyo on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss Washington's demand that Japan ease its restrictions on imports of U.S. beef, Japan's farm and health ministries said Monday.

Japan limits imports of U.S. beef to the meat of cattle up to 20 months old as a precaution against mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the first U.S. case of which was found in December 2003.

the USA is no-one's friend - especially not Japan's!! The USA is totally self-centred when it comes to imports/exports, not surprising perhaps, even understandable, they've got to protect themselves after all - but they go too far, to the point where they expect every country to obey their goddam orders!
"We wanna sell you this crud, excuse me, just clearing my throat, I meant prime beef of course... and we say it's safe no matter HOW old it is, no matter what diseases it may have, and we will NOT check it to make sure it's safe no matter how much you beg - but because we're God's soldiers we insist that you buy it anyway!!"

I wonder what the Japanese representatives will say? I'll be waiting to see if Abe is going to let America treat Japan like dirt or not...

This time US will argue saying your suppliers (Meat Hope)
are feeding and cheating people by mixing large quantity of pork with beef...has to be due shortage of beef...Now we are
here to supply you 'pure' beef...No reason for you to say NO !

It's such a sad relationship......

What does one expect?

I have been given info on this beef issue. Given who they were, Japan will have to concede to the demands eventually, so thinking of alternatives after the fact may be possible - classify the 20 mo. beef for domestic consumption and designate the older beef for another usage.

This US behavior may be it's true self b/c the Cold War distorted how the US treats countries. With no major threat, the focus is more free usage of power. Former Pres. Eisenhower was probably the last of another era.

From my sources, the pressure on Japan will ease after this Sept. 007, when the focus shifts into a higher gear.

Ya just don't get it America...

...ya broke da rules and now ya crying because we don't wanna play anymore!

Japan's not interested in your beef after you broke the rules on exports. What's not to understand? Even when it was back in the stores, no one was buying it!!

So 'demand' all you like - Japan won't be bullied into buying your meat!

Aussie beef rocks!

Maybe the US needs...

You`re really funny-what a knee slapper! Meat Hope has been lying to the people of Japan for decades about their products for decades and you want to bash the U.S. in your typical immature, chip-on-the shoulder manner. I agree to a great extent with the Japanese side on this matter with the U.S., but Meat Hope is solely a shameful example of Japanese business practices, and is totally irrelevant to anything here about the U.S. Nice try.

I can hear it now,
Take our beef damn-it.
[bold]

Then so politely,
No we don't want your dirty beef.

[bold]
Take it damn-it, our farmers are dieing and we can't subsidise them enough.

Then a polite bow,
we don't need your beef anymore. We buy ours from Australia now.

Then the Cowboys stomp out leaving grumbling... crap, we got to start another war somewhere so we can find new markets.

That's the way it'll go... <:-)

I got no chip on my shoulder. Not against the US. I do think whoever is in charge of beef exports is an idiot though. Whereas they have cases of BSE in Canada, Japan imports Canadian beef because we do what they ask. Very very simple.

And the reason why the US beef people do not want blanket testing or a comprehensive test regimen is so they don't lose the US consumer which is a market many many times larger than the export industry.

And sure, another bad meat packer. The industry is corrupt. And they got away with using filler in their ground beef. I don't think its the most earth shattering discovery in the annals of beef consumption. I think forcing the cows to go carnivorous therefore causing prions or whatever to pop up, is a bit more serious.

Hypocrit US

While US bans importing eel from China, US nudge Japan to open the door for US beef.
