Tokyo unveils logo for 2016 bid

TOKYO — The Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee on Tuesday unveiled its logo for the city's bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, Tsunekazu Takeda, president of the Japanese Olympic Committee, and lchiro Kono, chairman & CEO of the Tokyo 2016 Olympic Games Bid Committee, launched the logo at Tokyo International Forum before 200 guests. The logo depicts a traditional "musubi" knot used to decorate gift money envelopes and other presents in Japan.

Tokyo, which hosted the 1964 Olympics, is one of about half a dozen expected candidates for the 2016 games, including Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. The winner will be announced in 2009.

Have to admit it does look like Japan is pretty serious about this bid for the games, as evident by this real cool logo design.
Though rumor has it the 'Hello Kitty' logo give it pretty good run for the money before they settled on this one in the final selection process. :)

This is what it says to me:

"Tokyo: We're daffy for taffy!"

And could they make it look less noose-like?

Nobody told any of you huh? The ultimate goal of Tokyo is to eliminate all trees and nature by covering them over with concrete. The Olympic bid is just an excuse to pave over the entire park with concrete, just like they do with rivers, parks and playgrounds. Japan is prone to earthquakes, so the only solution is to cover Japan entirely in concrete. Then, when the big earthquake hits, Tokyo will just break away from Japan and float off into the sea as a separate country! Concrete! Good one Ishihara, start with sticking the Olympics on Yoyogi park, the sheeple won't say a thing...

Thank you for your update. That said, I do believe there would be need for more than a single site.

Any tips on where a concerned citizen can get their hands on the current "final plan"?

Applicant City

Sounds like a winner to me! Put it next to all of the "Participant" badges.

There is not a final plan available yet but from the proposal that was put forward to get Tokyo as the host city has a map and explanation of locations at the following location:
http://www.tokyo2016.or.jp/en/plan/pdf/fundamental_principles.pdf

Item 16 Basketball and final of handball are shown at "Yoyogi national stadium first gymnasium" which I understand to be an existing facility.

Actually he (Ishihara) was all for the bid for the 2016 Olympics in Tokyo until one of his staff reminded him that the Olympics is made up of every race, color and creed. There is no All Japanese Olympics. So in order to keep the obvious pending crime wave from coming to his fair city, Ishihara is commissioning the "anti-participant city" campaign. Their proposed logo being a policeman with the arms crossed forming a X.

Better than I expected, but still a little weak. I like the font used for Tokyo and 2016, though.

Not at all going to help them get it, but hey...

Nice job!

While I have absoulutely no time for the fascist Ishihara, I wish Toyko well in its bid for the 2016 Games. Great logo!

Love that logo! Who is the devious designer who managed to slip such an obious allusion to bribery by the committee. I'd like to shake that person's hand.

LOL yeah i was thinking the same.
