Man hospitalized after swallowing fish hook in convenience store burger

HYOGO — Police on Tuesday said that a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital on Sunday night after he swallowed a 1-cm fish hook inside a hamburger that his mother bought for him at a FamilyMart convenience store in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture.

According to police, the man's mother bought the "tartar burger" around 4 p.m. and heated it up for her son that night. He complained of a severe stomach ache around 8 p.m. and was taken to hospital. An X-ray revealed the hook inside his stomach.

Police said a second hook was found inside the burger's wrapping paper and believe they may have been deliberately placed in the burger.

The company that makes the burgers said that 1,200 were made on Sunday morning and that they had all been passed through a metal detector. Although no other complaints have been received, FamilyMart stopped selling the product on Monday.

if it was in a wrapper like th earticle says, it cant have been heated in a grill type oven, and you're right aboutthe hooks in th emicrowave thing. Maybe Mum was sick of her boy gulping his food down too. Hope it wasn't a rusty hook. Either way, its gonna hurt like hell on the way out.

Chew their food? Have you ever observed Japanese both male and females eat? Most of the time, food is either inhaled like slurpping or just put in mouth and swollowed. I've been here 7 years and every time I go out with the Japanese both from work or socially, I am almost always the last to finish a meal even when I have a 10-15 minute head start and less food. When I ask how they can eat so fast and don't they chew their food, they seem quite proud that they don't. I suspect the lack of chewing is what gives them stomaches and indigestion half of the time. My first response after reading this article was, if he actually chewed his food, the hook wouldn't be in his stomach.

It is not unheard of that people put foreign objects in their food in hope of getting monetary compensation from the company they bought the food from.

Although most Japanese like to eat hambergars and make use of Con-Vini(abbreviation of Convenient-store), safe for food in the daily foods are endangered.

I WON'T eat pin burger!

I've had the tartar burger and it's quite nice. I used to eat this brand of burger every Tuesday at work but think I'll pass from now on. With all these contamination stories, I'm really starting to question the origin and preparation of my foods. Best to make your own guys!

???? What does cooking proper food, eating slow and chewing have to do with growing up? Japan does have the longest life spans and most Japanese do not eat huge portions like in North America and wolf it down with a HUGE super Big Gulp.

You can't hide a whale hook in a hamburger or kujiraburger.

You gotta stay paranoid in today's world. Several years ago a dentist and his girlfriend pu ex-lax in trick-or-treaters' sacks on Hallowe'en in Mission San Jose, CA. Cost them ten thousand bucks each.

It's not a fish burger, it's a hamburger with tartar sauce. Can you believe that?

At first I thought it was odd too but why is it strange? What is tartar sauce? Pretty much pickles and mayo which a lot of people put on their burgers anyways.
