Taxi stand for excellent drivers opens in Tokyo

A taxi stand for excellent drivers at Shimbashi Station

TOKYO — A taxi stand for cabbies who have been given "excellent driver" awards opened outside JR Shimbashi Station in Tokyo on Thursday. Taxi drivers' organizations in Tokyo annually award long-term drivers who have not been punished or fined by laws related to the taxi industry, and about whom there have never been any passenger complaints.

In the Tokyo area which the organizations cover, about 9,000 from among 90,000 independent and corporate drivers were given "Master with Three Stars" and "Excellent Driver" awards. The organizations see the stand as an experimental attempt at customer satisfaction, and will consider more stands if they are popular.

Ummm, actually, I think this idea DOES give them more money, because it gives them a separate line and thus allows them the chance to get more customers more quickly.

good idea, will they give stands to the worst drivers? the crusty old one who simultaneously drove me, checked the horseraces in his newspaper and talked to his friend about his betting over the (thankfully hands free) mobile phone for example? I took his name from the dashcard and reported him but was given the brush off. most of taxis I have used in Japan are very clean with reasonably polite drivers, there have been a few who shouldnt be allowed behind a wheel though

So this means that these are a special breed of cabbie, able to slip under the radar of police when they, like the vast majority of taxi drivers out there, break traffic laws with reckless abandon, including cutting cars off to merge, not using signals when they do so, braking suddenly, making illegal u-turns, driving well over the posted speed limit when rushing to pick up a fare, but driving well under the posted speed limit to find an address, subsequently clogging up major arterials, sleeping in their taxis along major roads during down time, again, clogging up traffic flow, and generally assuming the rules of the road don't apply to them under most circumstances – because they're in a cab.

Kudos to the great and fearsome Taxi Warriors.

sounds like a great idea, but won't that harm the business of the taxis in the other line? who would pick the "crappy ojisan" lane rather than the "excellent driver" one? interesting to see how this move plays out.
