KANAGAWA Police on Monday decided to indict the 33-year-old female director of a kindergarten in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, over the death of a 18-month-old boy in 2005. Prosecutors said the former director will be charged with manslaughter in the death of the boy who drowned in a water basin.
According to police investigations, the suspect was cleaning the toilets and saw the boy going unaccompanied to the water basin room. He was later found with his face immersed in the water. He was taken to hospital where he fell into a coma and died seven months later.
Police said that just before the accident, the suspect let another girl play in the water basin area with the basins full.
Police said it took a long time to send the case to prosecutors because the suspect had initially admitted responsibility but then denied it. There were no other witnesses at the time of the incident. The kindergarten, which opened in 1995, was closed in 2006 because of the accident.
