Olympus to bolster medical business through M&As

TOKYO — Olympus Corp intends to bolster its medical business through mergers and acquisitions, President Tsuyoshi Kikukawa said Wednesday. Kikukawa said Olympus will consider acquisitions mainly in areas where the company can take advantage of its business resources and showed interest in health-counseling services.

Last month, Olympus acquired Gyrus Group PLC of Britain, a medical equipment maker, for 206 billion yen. Although the price was four times as high as the British firm's annual sales, Kikukawa argued that the acquisition was a smart move, saying it will help Olympus strengthen its development and sales in the medical equipment sector.

Olympus will build a plant for making surgical equipment in the Czech Republic, Kikukawa said. But the company has yet to decide the details, such as production scale, of its first plant in East Europe.
